Background of the Study
In rural areas of Northern Nigeria, Hausa language policies are designed to preserve indigenous linguistic heritage while enhancing educational outcomes. These policies emphasize the inclusion of Hausa in school curricula, teacher training, and community educational programs. Rural schools serve as critical sites for language maintenance, yet they face unique challenges compared to urban institutions. Limited resources, inadequate teacher training, and infrastructural deficits often impede the effective implementation of language policies. Additionally, socio-cultural factors such as community attitudes toward formal education and the pervasive influence of English further complicate the situation. This study examines the challenges encountered in implementing Hausa language policies in rural schools by collecting qualitative data from educators, students, and community leaders. The research aims to identify the specific obstacles that hinder policy execution and to propose targeted strategies to improve language teaching practices in rural contexts, thereby ensuring that the Hausa language remains vibrant and accessible to future generations.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the formulation of robust Hausa language policies, rural schools in Northern Nigeria continue to struggle with effective implementation. Issues such as limited funding, insufficient teacher training, and infrastructural challenges result in poor language instruction and diminished language proficiency. These difficulties threaten the long-term sustainability of the Hausa language in rural communities. This study aims to address these issues by investigating the specific challenges of policy implementation in rural schools and proposing solutions to bridge the gap between policy intent and practice.

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify key challenges in implementing Hausa language policies in rural schools.

  • To assess the impact of these challenges on language proficiency.

  • To recommend strategies for effective policy implementation.

Research Questions

  • What are the main challenges in implementing Hausa language policies in rural schools?

  • How do these challenges affect student language outcomes?

  • What measures can overcome these challenges?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the critical challenges of implementing Hausa language policies in rural educational settings. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and community leaders, leading to improved language teaching practices and sustained cultural heritage in rural areas.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to rural schools in Northern Nigeria and does not consider urban educational contexts or other language policies.
